UK Euro Partner was presented with another order from HMPS. This follows on from the Persoanl Protective Equipment Seminars being presented to the health & saftey officers at the HMPS quarterly area meetings. The seminars are presented by UK Euro Partner on behalf of Safe Light.

UK Euro Partner has so far presented to four areal meetings and received a warm welcome followed by intense interest in its roll as information provider for the development of PPE and its application in rapid response emergency situations.

As a result of a recent meeting HMP Lewes opted to further protect their staff by investing in the class 3 high visibility waistcoats, denoting them as Vehicle Escort jackets. These jackets are used to comply with regulations regarding working on or near roads.

Transport Infrastructure - Scotland - Contralco

UK Euro Partner has been chosen as the organisation to represent Personal Protective Equipment at the Transport Infrastructure meeting to be held at the Dynamic Earth Centre in Edinburgh on 26 Mar 2009.

UK Euro Partner has also agreed to sponsor part of the event and will be presenting all delegates with samples of the new Contralco alcohol breath test. This product is tested and certified to Uk and European standards and is expected to become one of the leading exponents in the drive towards increased road saftey in Scotland as well as England.

Norec - Safe Light Pod

Norec, the company responsible for management and safety at many of the UK power stations has recently placed its second order with UK Euro Partner. The order included the provision of bespoke SHE Co-ordinator high visibility kits and the first of the Safe Light Pods with the new clearer labelling format.

The Pod is prepacked in tubes of 50 units for ease of delivery and access. The new Pod label provides improved clarity for reading information about the product as well as instructions for use and the reference information for re-ordering. Typical logic of Safe Light also means the colour coding of the Pod is written and marked therefore suitable for use people even if suffering from colour blindness.

The new labels are available on all colour Pods from UK Euro Partner and are designed for the attachment of Pod accessories such as the HTA bonding tape, Velcro Velcoin, Safety Pin, Badge Magnet and power magnate.

Safe Light - Mountain Rescue

UK Euro Partner has sponsored its first Scottish mountain rescue team. The first team to be awarded the sponsorship is Galloway Mountain Rescue Team.

They received the sponsorship award in the form of Safe Light BatonSafe Kits, which will be useful at night as demarkation tools.

One observer noted that it was interested to see a new sponsor for the mountain rescue teams when generally sponsorship is being reduced due to the economic downturn. UK Euro Partner has won its first order with Speciality Minerals, a subsiduary of Mineral Technologies Inc., of USA.

The order included both the Safe Light Emergency Light Kit and Site Light Kit. The benefit of these kits is that they are mobile and can be deployed in any area immediately. UK Euro Partner expects to formalise additional orders in the not too distant future both locally and abroad.

Sponsor a class - Pilot Scheme exceeds 500

The sponsor a class pilot scheme has been tested during 2008 and has resulted in the sponsorship of more than 500 school children with the High Visibility Kit developed by Safe Light.

The programme aims to protect school children on the roads in the UK by finding sponsors to 'sponsor a class'. The typical cost of this is around £360.oo including VAT and delivery. Most organisations are able to reclaim the cost of the excercise. The reasoning behind the sponsorship programme was to allow school children to be more protected in an ever increasing environment of reckless driving, without the cost burden to parents or schools who may not otherwise be able to afford it.

Even in these times of economic downturn it is good to see people supporting this programme and the public backing is predicted to grow during 2009.

It is expected that sponsor a class will develop into an independent charity during 2009 as the programme spreads across the United Kingdom.

Contralco - Safe Light - Alcohol Breath Test

Contralco and Safe Light having reached agreement in November of 2008 have instituted the contract for the supply and distribution of the Contralco alcohol breath test product in the UK. This was formalised by the delivery of the first 5,000 units to UK Euro Partner before Christmas.

The Contralco alcohol breath test is a fully certified and patented product and recognised as the leading product of its kind in Europe.

UK Euro Partner working on behalf of Safe Light incorporate the breathalysers within the DriverSafe Kit produced by Safe Light.

The breathalyser will also be distributed as part of the D-CAT:2007 system (Daily-Commercial Alcohol Test). This system has been developed for use by corporate bodies as a non-penal system and is based on the eradication of accidents and deaths in the work place as opposed to the punishment of those who might, even un-knowingly, attend work or operate machinery under the influence of alcohol.

UK Euro Partner has been awarded its first contract with Her Majesty's Prison Service (HMPS) for visible safety personal protection equipment.

This will be a bespoke order for a class 2 waistcoat that will also utlize the Safe Light Dual Light Technology (DLT-08) on the rear of the waistcoat. This is a positive note as UK Euro Partner were only recently approved and added to the iProc purchasing system used by the Home Office and HMPS.

UK Euro Partner was able to demonstrate that the Safe Light developed waistcoats and jackets using the DLT-08 system provides enhanced visible safety for the wearer. Instrumental in the development of the working relationship was the attention to detail and effort made by Tony Harper, the sales manager for UK Euro Partner.

Safe Light - Southampton Boat Show Remembered

Back in Setember 2008 UK Euro Partner took part in its first boat show, launching the MarineSafe Kit and the ScubaSafe Kit. The ehibition proved a great opportunity to meet other professionals in the industry as well as to carry out the general promotion of these two new and important products to the marine safety industry. Now all the excitement of the show is over, our Tony Harper (who by now is probably famous in the boating world) is still dealing with and arranging meetings from the knock on effect of the show. We are arranging meetings in Hamble Marina and expect soon to have instructions from the prestigeous group Princess Yachts.

As a direct result of the exhibition UK Euro Partner held meetings with organisations such as RORC in London to look at gaining formal approval for the MarineSafe Kit to be used as an integral part of the safety kit for the offshore racing entity. Ironically the guidelines and recommendations name our prodiuction partners as the recommended product to keep on board.

Safe Light Dazzles Southampton Boat Show

Safe Light made its first appearance at the Southampton Boat Show this year, which happens to be the 40th anniversary year of the show. The feature of the Safe Light stand at E23 was the formal release of the MarineSafe Kit, which was well received by both the public and the industry alike.

As part of the 40th year celebrations UKEP had all Polo shirts and jackets printed not only with the company and product logos but also with the anniversary detail. It was unfortunate then that the specially printed Musto Jackets were stolen from the stand during the day. These jackets are unique and were the envy of all who saw them including the great Henri Lloyd.

The show was generally a great success with new friendships and business relationships being rooted in the spirit of the show. UKEP sales manager Tony Harper was quoted as saying, "the southampton boat show represents an excellent opportunity to present new products and ideas to the public and the general boat industry, we have received tremendous response from the industry and outside support from IoW pickles".

MarineSafe Kit - Floats Hanse Yachts

UK Euro Partner chose the Southampton International Boat Show as the venue to formerly launch the Safe Light MarineSafe Kit. Although a late entry at the show the Safe Light stand took a good position at stand number E23. The was a lot of interest immediately from the industry resulting in the sale of several MarineSafe Kits to Hanse Yachts at the show. These kits were used as presentation sets for orders taken at the show. Intrestingly it appears Hanse Yachts used all the kits they had purchased. The relationship between Hanse and UKEP was established by our own Tony Harper.

As a result of this favourable outcome it is possible that the two organisations will look at creating a more formal relationship.

Safe Light - High Visibility Waistcoat DLT08 meets EN471

UK Euro Partner is pleased to confirm the advanced High Visibility Waistcoat designed by Safe Light of Switzerland, and as mentioned in our article on 03 June 2008, has been fully tested and approved by SATRA giving it the certification of EN471:2003 class 2. This makes the Safe Light High Visibility Waistcoat probably the most advance visible safety product on the market.

Safe Light - Fire Marshals come to town

Two of UK Euro Partners leading executives completed their Fire Marshal training course this week. Putting aside other work and issues both men agreed it was sensible and logical for them to be trained as Fire Marshals so understanding better the needs of clients under pressure.

It became clear during the course, run under Fire Protection Association guidelines, that the Fire Marshal Kit is a particularly relevent product for this market sector. However as a result of the questions raised during the course and forwarded back to Safe Light research, it is now likely the Fire Marshal Kit will be upgraded with a Red Fire Marshal Baseball Cap with the rear insert for the Pod Bright and labeled at the front with the words Fire Marshal. This means that the Fire Marshal will become more visible more easily to more people. Including the Pod Bright means the increased visibility is continued in the dark.

Safe Light - UKEP accredited to British Safety Council

UK Euro Partner the Safe Light distributor has been accredited to membership of the British Safety Council. This is further recognition of UKEP's commitment to progressing the quality and efficieny of its safety programmes.
UKEP is preparing a set of instructional courses to be presented to BSC for review and approval prior to releasing the Safety Instruction Programme for general use. The purpose of the review is to ensure the method and content of the SIP meet with BSC standards.
The courses will include instruction and guidelines for how, where and why to use visibility equipment when at work or travelling; an introduction to the D-CAT:2007 system, alcohol breath test. Companies and individuals desiring to book a place on one of the new courses will be able to do so probably after October 2008.

Safe Light - BatonSafe Kit at Evans Vanodine

UK Euro Partner have been awarded an order for Safe Light anti panic lighting products by Evans Vanodine in the Midlands. To ensure the correct rpoducts were used in the appropriate locations a survey was first carried out by a representative from UK Euro Partner. The result of the survey led to the supply of several Site Light Kits and the development and release of the BatonSafe Kit. The BatonSafe Kit is in effect a smaller version of the Site Light Kit that is personalised by use of the Safe Light High Visibility Bag which means the Kit can be attached to a belt or used as an armband. The benefit of this is that the Kit is with the user at all times in case of emergency.

Alcohol Breath Test – D-CAT:2007 System

Why make a voluntary alcohol breath test at work, what are the benefits and who should partake?

The aim of the voluntary alcohol breath test is to bring employees and employers together in a unified proactive effort to help protect people from the results of accidents and fatalities caused by the effects of alcohol in the work place. The system is designed specifically as a preventative measure to be adopted voluntarily by all employees at all levels.

What is an alcohol breath test?

An alcohol breath test or breathalyser measures the level of alcohol in the breath and this correlates directly to the amount of alcohol in the blood.

The Purpose of the D-CaT:2007 system – alcohol breath test

The purpose is to identify employees who are not in a fit state to carry out their duties under the terms of their contract and the employment act (please refer to the section on the legal aspect) but not to penalise employees that record a fail in the test, in fact there is no recommendation from the programme to take any action other than removing the apparent danger at the time of testing. This approach ensures that the aim remains focused at all times on the protection and safety of employees and those around them therefore this is a prevention method.

Alcohol in the UK

Alcohol is endemic in UK culture and in recent years has figured as a major contributor to accidents and fatalities caused by underage drinkers and adolescents drinking excessively. Because it is virtually impossible to predict where and when a person may have an alcoholic drink or drink to excess and whether a person will habitually drink before work the test is designed to be readily available therefore the system has been designed for standalone use without batteries or associated powered devices. It is a single use system that requires no additional equipment to operate it or produce the final results therefore it can be administered quickly and easily providing immediate results. No secondary examination is necessary.

The case for Voluntary Testing

It is important that a company operating this system does so from the correct perspective. This means that the company should be aware that the programme is about removing the threat of alcohol related accidents and not about penalising employees who fail the test. This is quite critical as the system should be operated with the consent of employees who will take the test on a voluntary basis (please refer to the section on testing) as this demonstrates their positive commitment to a safer working environment. Furthermore it is important that employees should clearly understand the goals of a company using the system and this should be done so in a clear written format to all employees with a permanent statement provided perhaps in the area where the test takes place.

The focus of the test

The most important message of the programme is the protection of people against the results of alcohol. The test objectivity is about identifying the risk areas and it is important this should be understood as a test fail may not always be a sinister result. This is necessary because in some cases it may be that an employee fails the test as a result of a previous night’s celebration and though the individual has slept and appears in full control of their faculties the alcohol may still be present in the body. The secondary issue is the economic cost to institute such a programme and maintain it on a daily basis. The D-CaT:2007 system can be quickly established subject to an organisation’s internal structure. The system costs are around £0.99 per day per user making the programme a cost effective preventative method. In fact the relative cost between prevention and result are substantial; this can be equated in terms of a £250,000.00 court settlement which represents more than 100 employees tested every working day for ten years, thus the focus remains entirely on the identification of an alcohol issue.

Positive action by the employer

The testing system should be viewed as a company’s positive action towards accident prevention, without consideration to the overall performance and economic benefits. By adopting the system a company will demonstrate its commitment to identifying and minimising risks from alcohol related incidents in the work place and perhaps as important, if a company operates in the public sector it demonstrates its commitment to identifying and minimising the risks to the public

Positive action by the employee

The system is designed as a safe guard for employees and to empower them to ensure they are protected from entering a work area or environment where their condition may result in an accident or fatality to themselves or others. The long term effects of which could be permanent loss of employment or imprisonment.

Alcohol related facts

It is important to realise that alcohol currently a major contributory factor to accidents and death in the UK. A simple analysis of the results of a fatality from an alcohol related incident may read as follows:

The Perpetrator:
May be fined or imprisoned as a result of his/her actions resulting in loss of income in the immediate future and perhaps long term. The results of this means any dependants of the perpetrator are now suffering as a direct result of their actions.

The Victim:
Presuming the victim has a family and dependants; the immediate family will suffer the trauma of coming to terms with the loss of a loved one, the dependants will suffer as a result of the loss both financially and emotionally. A human being is irreplaceable within the context of their family.

Counting the cost of alcohol related accidents

The International Labour Organisation states “in many workplaces, 20 to 25 per cent of accidents at work involve intoxicated people injuring themselves and innocent victims”.

The TSSA states “Problems created in the workplace as a result of alcohol include:
Absenteeism, costing an estimated £2 billion a year to industry is strongly related to occasional excessive or inappropriate drinking. Performance and productivity are affected by employees under-performing due to the influence of drink or being hung over. It may take longer than one day to recover from a heavy binge. Accidents with alcohol as a contributory factor are estimated to comprise 20-25% of all workplace accidents. With drinking impairing concentration, judgement and co-ordination, accidents can affect the drinker and those around them. Employers have legal responsibilities regarding the safety of employees and, where relevant, the general public. The loss of staff and costs of recruitment escalate when employers need to replace experienced and trained staff. It is usually more effective to retain existing staff, if possible, by supporting them in dealing with their problems than to incur the cost of recruiting and training new staff”.

The legal aspect

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 places a duty on employers to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their employees. They must ensure that employees do not injure themselves or endanger the public or colleagues. This has particular relevance to alcohol and the use of machinery or vehicles. The Road Traffic Act 1988 provides that any person driving, or attempting to drive, a motor vehicle whilst unfit to drive through alcohol use can be prosecuted under this act. This includes driving as part of work related duties. The Transport and Works Act 1992 states that it is a criminal offence for certain employees to be unfit through alcohol use whilst working on transport systems such as railways. The operators of the system would be liable if they had been negligent in their duty to prevent the offence occurring. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992 employers have a duty to assess the risks to the health and safety of their employees. Knowingly allowing an employee to continue working when affected by alcohol and where their behaviour places the employee or other colleagues at risk could make an employer liable to prosecution. Employees should also take reasonable care of themselves and others who could be affected by their actions at work.

Occupations typically at higher risk

Alcohol Concern has reported that statistically, certain occupations show a higher incidence of alcohol-related deaths than others. Obvious reasons for higher levels of drinking may include the ready availability of alcohol, high levels of occupational stress or as in some working cultures, social pressure to drink.
Those occupational sectors reporting the highest consumption of more than 14 (for women) or 21 (for men) units of alcohol per week (occupation with the highest level first) were:
Women: security, arts & sport, professional (other), professional (science), managerial, clerical, transport. Men: construction, arts & sport, professional (other), assembly workers, metal & electrical, managerial.
Men from any level or income group may develop alcohol problems, though those earning under £100 or over £500 weekly appear slightly more vulnerable. Among women, those working full-time in professional or managerial posts are most likely to develop problems.

Likely underlying reasons for excessive alcohol consumption at work

Alcohol problems sometimes stem from an attempt to cope with underlying problems such as stress, relationship difficulties or depression. The result can often be that these problems are then exacerbated by drinking and the alcohol use itself becomes a problem.
In the case of an employee experiencing an alcohol problem, this could also be linked to workplace stress or an organizational culture that encourages or tolerates heavy drinking. Employees often use drinking as a way of socializing or bonding whilst some employers traditionally use or include drinking in the process of doing business, e.g. via working lunches.

Workplace alcohol policies

Alcohol policies are fundamental in helping to tackle alcohol-related problems at work. Alcohol problems in the workplace should be viewed as a health issue, and an alcohol policy should be located in, or linked to one or more of an organisation’s procedures on managing health and safety as well as personnel and/or general management issues.
An alcohol policy will be more successful if supported by a programme of training that raises alcohol awareness and supports managers in its application. Employers often have a parallel or combined policy to address drug misuse.

Key principles of an alcohol policy for the workplace

An effective workplace alcohol policy should:
clarify that an employer has a legitimate interest in an employee’s life outside work when it affects their own or others’ performance, health or safety; regard an alcohol problem as a health problem rather than being an immediate cause for discipline or dismissal; be a clear statement of intent agreed by employers and trade union representatives; be clearly understood by and apply equally to everyone in an organisation; clearly delineate responsibility and give guidance to managers on procedures to follow, signalling when disciplinary action, if appropriate, should be instigated; establish procedures for referring an employee with alcohol problems to in-house support or outside specialist services; clarify rules of confidentiality in order to encourage staff or colleagues to come forward; ensure managers receive appropriate training to implement the policy; be publicised at regular intervals to staff; and be reviewed regularly, probably every 12 months.

Helping employees with alcohol problems

There can be signs suggestive of alcohol related problems, although care should be taken as these could be due to underlying health problems such as stress or depression. Signs of possible alcohol problems in an employee may include:
Work performance, including missed appointments or deadlines, increased error rate, poor concentration, unreliability or an inability to remember instructions. Attendance, including lateness in the mornings or after lunch, unauthorised leave, patterns of absence (e.g. after weekends), recurring causes of absence. Conduct, such as withdrawal, depression, anxiety, poor co-operation, mood changes, uncharacteristic behaviour, accidents, alcohol on the breath, customer complaints.
It is important to keep in mind that an employee’s alcohol use can often affect other staff, either by increasing their workload or their stress levels as a result of trying to cover up for a colleague who is drinking inappropriately or to excess.
Alcohol problems should be regarded primarily as health issues rather than an immediate cause for discipline and negotiators should encourage employers to reflect this in any workplace policy. This will encourage staff with problems to come forward and decrease the likelihood of collusion by colleagues not wishing to ’get someone into trouble’.

Getting specialist help

Some larger employers or blue chip companies will have an occupational health department or employee assistance programme that may include an in-house counselling service with expertise in alcohol problems.
Alternatively, individuals might be encouraged to approach their GP or seek to be referred to a community alcohol service, or attend Alcoholics Anonymous, an abstinence-based self-help group. In-patient detoxification and residential treatment facilities may also be available although normally these would be through referral following a full assessment.

Testing

Testing employees or potential employees for alcohol remains controversial, raising both industrial relations and civil liberties issues.
Whilst it is reasonable to expect employees to be unimpaired by alcohol whilst at work, it could be argued that requiring an employee to undergo a test ’without cause’ (randomly or without specific evidence that they are impaired) is unfair and intrusive.
In this context, the Data Protection Act and the Human Rights Act, particularly Article 8 concerning an individual’s right to privacy, have implications for employers.
Under UK law, employers’ have a responsibility to demonstrate ’due diligence’ (take reasonable care) to prevent an offence if an employee’s ability to work safely is impaired. This need to actively prevent alcohol or drug-related accidents has led companies in the transport sector to introduce testing to prevent employees’ substance use in the workplace. Industries with staff in ’safety critical’ roles, using machinery for instance, do test employees for alcohol.

Methods of testing

Alcohol testing indicates whether an individual is under the influence at that time.
Alcohol use can be tested in several ways:

Breath testing; a ’breathalyser’ measures the level of alcohol in the breath. This is both convenient and inexpensive.
Blood testing; is by means of a blood test although this is more invasive than a breath test. It is often inappropriate in a workplace setting due to lack of staff suitably trained to take samples.

Drink and work - a dangerous cocktail

The recent report entitled A potent cocktail was the TUC’s response to a wide-ranging trawl being undertaken by the Cabinet Office and the Department of Health for ideas on how to tackle the issue of alcohol in the workplace.
To illustrate the extent of the problem, the TUC submission refers to a recent Alcohol Concern survey which showed that almost two-thirds of employers (60%) were experiencing problems as a result of staff boozing.
As not enough is understood about the effects of drink on the workplace, the TUC is calling on the government to fund more research into what is becoming a growing problem. It also points to an increase in factors such as stress, bullying, long hours, working away from home and an office culture which can all lead to individual workers consuming more alcohol than is good for them.
A potent cocktail suggests a number of ways that the government, employers and unions might tackle the drink/work issue:
The government should fund research looking at the extent of the misuse of alcohol by individuals at work, its effect on the workplace and its cost to the nation. The government could also provide financial incentives for those employers offering counselling and other types of employee assistance programmes to encourage more workers to come forward and admit or acknowledge their alcohol problems. Employers who don’t have alcohol policies should draw them up in consultation with unions in the workplace. Policies should cover such topics as tackling the causes of excessive drinking, confidentiality, counselling, screening, testing and occupational health services.

Further to the recent success of Safe Light in securing and completing its first order on time for Bamako International Airport, Safe Light have been presented with an additional order.

Products ordered are for both physical and visible protection, including hand protection, weather protection and foot protection. This second order reinforces the value placed on Safe Light products and services.

Following the first success Safe Light have been approached by other international airport operators in Europe and the Middle East. A spokesman for Safe Light stated that "our appeal to airport operators is our flexibility meaning that we can supply all safety products quickly and efficiently as well as creating bespoke articles to meet specific needs".

Safe Light - MarineSafe Kit floats away with success

The MarineSafe Kit produced by Safe Light is a well tested product. All components are tested and certified and even in some cases patented. This does not stop UKEP and Safe Light from making further tests.

Recently the UKEP team visited the Isle of Wight as part of a photographic expedition. During the photographic session our sales manager managed to instantly create a new test for the complete MarineSafe Kit. By knocking it off the railings on the Yarmouth Pier we were able to observe it carefully (frantically) as it floated away. There are pictures to document this episode.

We day was saved by a family who had a RIB nearby and kindly went to find and retrieve our MarineSafe Kit. After less the 30 mins the Kit was safely back in our possession and we offered our thanks to the family who saved our Kit. Not detered by recent events our sales manager proceeded to enlighten the family about the benefits of our MarineSafe Kit, taking time to note that he could also guarantee the entire Kit floats should it ever fall overboard!

The afternoons events created some speculation and fun for the members of the Royal Solent Yacht Club who observed the goings on with some interest and kindly allowed us access to their pier to retrieve the MarineSafe Kit.

Safe Light has released the D-CaT:2007 System for monitoring alcohol levels prior to commencing work.

This is particularly good news for both organisations and employees where employees are driving or operating heavy or dangerous machinery that can be of risk to themselves or others. The D-CaT:2007 System will analyse alcohol on the breath and allow the monitor to create a file of results showing general drink trends therefore allowing preventative action before an accident or fatality occurs.

The D-CaT:2007 System is of benefit to both the employee and employer because it protects the employee from putting themselves in a potentially dangerous situation which may adversely affect their livelihood or at worse result in criminal prosecution. It also protects the employer from unwittingly allowing the operation of vehicles, plant or machinery on or off premises by an employee who is not fit to do so. The Employment Act 2002 clearly states that an employee must ensure he/she is in a fit condition to execute his/her duties. Thus the test will allow an employer to relieve an employee of work for a day if he/she fails the test - realistically this can be for many reasons that would or should never lead to dismissal; example case: A man arrives at work at 08:30 after having celebrated his wifes birthday with generous amounts of alcohol and friends until 03:00 the same morning. Although the man may have taken some rest and feel in control of all his faculties he may still have traces or more of the alcohol in his system. Therefore the D-CaT:2007 System becomes a safety system for all concerned.

The D-CaT:2007 System is extremely cost effective and easy to operate. Each test kit is individually hygenically sealed. The activator unit of the system is a patented and certified product guaranteeing reliable results time after time. An interesting ecological point of this system is that it is a chemically activated system; that means no need for calibration or secondary equipment, no batteries or other power source to charge or replace. This also means the system can be easily used for occasional or random checks.

The D-CaT:2007 System, if adopted by it's present prospectives is likely to become the UK standard for work related alcohol testing. If members of the government decide to adopt this system as a standard in the UK it will go a long way to saving unnecessary cost and time to industry as well as helping to ensure a safer environment for the public and employees in general.

Safe Light – Visible Safety at Bamako (Mali) Airport

Safe Light has recently completed delivery of a significant project Bamako International Airport in Mali, West Africa. The Airport handling is managed by ASAM SA, a Malian company.

Safe Light has to comply with strict safety guidelines within the framework of an airport management and international safety regulations, as stipulated by such organisations as ISO, leading to certification as EN471, EN345 EN388. The reason for so much compliance and certification? - One thing; Ultimate Passenger Safety.

The project was awarded to Safe Light on the basis of its ability to meet all the safety criteria and to guarantee timely delivery. The project included the production and delivery of visible safety products as well as other equipment for the airport ground personnel, including air handling, cargo and general ground staff.

The High Visibility Waistcoats were all stamped with the ASAM logo. Other equipment included anti-static, non-slip safety foot wear, ear protection; full body wet weather protection and safety gloves. All equipment having arrived quickly and without damage or loss, the Safe Light team were congratulated by the client.

It is ironic that Safe Light was awarded the contract in the region where much of its initial product testing was carried out. As one member of the test team stated " we came to test 500 kits in the region and sold 15,000."

Sponsor a class has had it's first winner of the online competition on the website. The winner is a class from Longshaw Primary school in East London.

The competition is part of the interactive programme for school children to learn about road safety once they have received their sponsor a class kit from their sponsor. UK Euro Partner has been appointed to run the Sponsor a class programme which was established in London towards the end of 2006. The programme has been developed with help from 3M and is linked to LARSOA. As members of Rospa every attention is paid to the quality and reliability of the safety products, all components being EN certified.
